The beauty of the spiderless crankset...
Posted On 01/28/2008 | 08:59 PM by SS_Belmont
When you start getting into single speeds, the first thing that you will notice is how clean the drive train is.  When you pay close attention, you may notice that some cranks do not have a spiderarm which the ring mounts to, this is called a spiderless crankset and is considered by most SS folks to be the bling or icing on the cake for a nice SS ride.

The spiderless crankset/ring setup can created using an old school XTR M957
This is what an XTR Old School M950 Crankset looks like from the front:

Here is the XTRM950 with a boone ring before I buffed off the coating:

This is what it can look like with a little work!

The ring that you see in the above picture is Spot ring.  I have modified both the m950 and even the XTR 07’s aka Jeff Jones style.  I am preferential to the spiderless setup, but I like the outboard bearing BB’s so currently I am not running a spiderless setup.  I have been told that Middle Burn is coming up with an outboard BB style spiderless crankset so maybe I will go with that.

Regards,
SS

That boone ring is very nicely detailed!  The spiderless setup really cleans up the look of the drivetrain and simpler is usually better.
