Richmond is the perfect place to hold the National Duathlon Festival. Traditional on-road duathletes are welcome, off-road multisporters are welcome, and with no qualifying requirements it’s a great chance for anyone to try duathlon for the first time. It is also accessible for kids to try.
Set for April 26-27, with the transition zone/expo area in the field off 2nd Street between the Lee Bridge and Byrd Street, the run course will be the same for both off-road and on-road competitions. In addition to the traditional on-road duathlon events, the off-road events will capitalize on Richmond’s legendary trail system in the James River Parks. The off-road courses vary in difficulty. The youth races are held in the general vicinity of the transition area. All youth activities will take place within a central parental vantage point. Think of it as the multisport version of attending a kids’ soccer game.
“Richmond’s mountain bike course is awesome,” says Mark Junkermann, event director of the Camp Hilbert Mountain Bike Series. “The XTERRA pros love the Richmond trails because they are so rugged. And while you can ride the trails a lot, you rarely get to race them. This is another chance to race them, and it’s a national championships. If you have a good day, then you could win it all. How cool is that?”
