Looking for some feedback on some big volume 29er tires for the winter.  Looking for something that rolls pretty fast, and is reasonably light, but that will still hook up when the trails are a little softer.

Anybody know of a good combo?

Check out Panaracer Rampage 29

I got a set of these and really dig them, the roll fast and hook up great, and clear off mud well while riding.

I've been rolling on nothing but Maxxis Ignitor 2.1 front and rear for the last year and a half. This Christmas, my wife says "Mom doesn't know what to get you for Christmas...." and hands me her mother's credit card "Go spend $100"

SWEET!!

I go straight out and pick up a pair of Panaracer Rampage 2.35 (and some other stuff). This past weekend, had an awesome ride at Wilson's on my FS 29er rolling the Rampage up front. Messy, wet and cold but the tire held on wherever I pointed it!

He said light Mickey!   I run that tire up front on my SS and it never fades in the turns, but it's by no means light.

I am a weight weenie myself, but I decided to give the rampage 2.35   a chance and I like it.

I believe he said reasonably light. It definitely matches the other criteria. I've been running a Rampage up front for the last several (9-10) months and would NOT run anything else up front. In the rear, I will change out depending on conditions. Usually floating between an Ignitor, Resolution, or a Saguaro.

I too have a Rampage 2.35 up front on my SS and I like it, but it's not even close to what I would consider "reasonably light".  769grams is by my standards, does not fall into "reasonably light", as a matter fact the rampage 2.35 is one of the heaviest tires on the market.
This being said, I like the volume of the rampage and it might be the best cornering front tire I have ever owned.  But, there are other tires out there that corner almost as well for close to 200grams less, which is nearly a 1/2lb!

My plan is to go back to a 2.2 up front when I build up my new willits and do a comparison to see if I am willing to sacrifice the weight for the extra confidence on cornering benefit.  I am simply not convinced that the rampage is worth the extra weight.  Then again, there will always been someone to disagree with anything I have to say.
The only thing that I am 100% convinced of, is that I am MUCH faster on a 29!

SS - - what tire would be lighter and still have a big casing?  Looking for something with a bigger casing, but that will clean mud pretty well.

The Schwalbe Racing Ralph 2.4, which I think comes in around 610g, they also have thins in a 2.2 which I think comes in at 580g.  I have ran these on a 26 bike before and they are fast and have a buddy that is running the 2.2s both front and rear on his 29er and he loves them.

I think a good combination would be the Racing Ralph 2.4 up front and the 2.2 in the rear.

The fast tire that I have ever been on the the Charlotte area is the Nokian NBX Lite 2.2, but they only make this in a 2.6 version.  You can bet I will own the 29 version if they ever release them.

I just have a tough time knowing that I have close to 2lbs upfront when I think I can find a better compromise between weight and performance.  I really think the Racing Ralph combination will be a much better performer than that rampage.

It's advisable to test the combinations yourself as so many variables can impact performance, such as trail conditions, terrain etc.

I hope this helps and good look in your search.

Regards,
SS

I'll second the recommendation for the Racing Ralphs.  I've been using a 2.25 up front for the past 325 miles, no hanky panky with this tire, just a solid performer with great construction.

Well executed tire.

Been thinking about a Saguaro for the rear this summer.  Looks like a pretty quick roller that still has some cornering knobs on it.  I like the idea of the 2.2 casing in something that's still reasonably light.

Any feedback on it?  Read a few reviews that looked pretty favorable.
