I have an old 26" hardtail frame that I want to build up as a 96er. The frame is an Access (cheapy frame sold by Supergo a few years back). The geometry is standard XC stuff HA 71, SA 73 and actually wasn't a bad ride considering the cost. Bought it when they were closing this style out for $119. Pretty sure the geometry is a copy of the Stumpjumper hardtail as the numbers were very similar.
Dirtrag ran an article about setting up a suspension corrected 26" rigid fork that would take the 29" front wheel and would minimize the geometry change. To offset the rigid fork I'll search out the biggest volume 29er tire I can fit in the fork!
Anyone know about making the conversion? Need some guidance.
Any feedback on a really big 29er tire that is still considered an XC tire??

I have been thinking of doing this myself with my old ChingDa 26 frame and I was planning on using a Rampage 2.35.
Let me know how it goes.

Hey strnfat - I used the DirtRag conversion article with my 96er. I took my 1996 Indy Fab and slapped on a Zion 26" fork. I snagged the fork from jenson.com for $49. Great deal on a steel fork. The Zion seems a bit raked out, however it has not really altered the handling of the bike (lucky me). The biggest thing is check the axle to crown measurment. This is where your sterring will be most effected. Good Luck it's a fun bike to ride.

I thought about doing the same with my 26er for a while, but what I dig so much about 29ers is the increased rolling speed I get out of the larger wheels. The only real advantage I see in a 96er is that it will give you an obstacle roller over advantage for the front wheel, but it does nothing for the rear. However you will have the excelleration in the rear of a 26er. But once you get a 29er rolling it just seems to carry momentum better and definitely seems faster to me compared to a 26er, but I may be completely wrong about this.
I decided to skip the 96er thing and focus my attention on a 27.5 instead. I'd get the advantage of a larger wheel on both the front and back and should be able to use my existing fork. I'd just need a new 27.5 wheelset and rubber. Then I'd get the advantages of both a 26er and 29er.
The only big problem I see with a 27.5 wheel is the lack of good tire choices. I've been seriously considering a 27.5 for a few months now and may just build one up at some point.

No. I checked around and nearly ordered a Dimension rigid fork for the conversion, but decided to just buy a cheap 29er frame instead. Gave the 26 inch frame to Shredder so he may be giving it a shot!
I'm still interested in riding one, but decided to just to with a full blown 29er instead.
