Thinking about picking up a 29er hardtail frame to move some parts over to.  I want the best of all possible worlds - reasonable weight, fast, smooth ride, and low cost.

Any suggestions?

Go Steel, you'll get a smoother ride out of it than Aluminum. I myself like rollin on Ventana, but they don't offer a steel frame. So I'd probably look else where for another hard tail frame if I was in the market for one. I'd prabably go with a Vassago like what Chris Davis has, I like what I've read about the frames and the price is very reasonable.

Check out Vinnycactus' post, he said he can get a discount on the Sinister Simon Bar 29er frames. May be worth a look.

If you just want to get into a 29er frame quickly to check it out before you invest some serious funds, you can get the Zion for $145 or so from JensonUSA.

I normally ride an SS but I was planning on building up a geared 29er for Endurance races and in an effort to get into something quickly, I opted for a Zion and I have to say I am impressed for the money.  Of course I will tell you that I will buy another frame in the future, just to get a lighter frame, but it's very impressive for a hundred bucks!

If you want to shell out the ducks, I really like the Niner product, but I do agree wtih Mickey that Steel is a MUCH better ride that Al.

I have heard that someone will be bringing Ti frames to the market at a reasonable price so you may want to opt for a Ti frame if the price is right.

Good luck and for $100 it's hard to beat the Zion.
