Whitewater Center to charge $5 to park.  That's got to turn away folks that are coming to visit the park to check it out.  What about the restaurant?  I know I've taken my family for a walk around the river and then to grab dinner at the restaurant.  Will I go if I have to pay $5 just to park?

This probably won't turn many of the mountain bikers away, but there certainly won't be many lurkers out there if they are charged to $5 just to park.

I haven't been impressed with the trails at Catawba for many years. The entire trail network seems to be more of a patched up collections of trails that does not flow well at all. I'd ride it for the sake of having a place to ride, and it does have some of the best climbing options around the Charlotte area. But the climbs are all that I really like about the trail and toilet bowl is okay.

Throw in the trail congestion caused by the White Water Park visitors and a $5.00 parking fee and I doubt I'll be visiting anytime soon.

The only good I see coming out of a $5.00 parking fee is that it may reduce the amount of trail congestion that exist now. But I think it will hurt the park more than it will help, because of the reduction of park visitors.

Either way, Catawba is not what it once was... the premier MTB trail in Charlotte.

I guess the guy on Hawfield road has a great idea.
He is mad that the bikers who built & maintain the trails are basically getting told to pay up or loose the trails.
He has 15 acres that his says he will turn into a parking lot for us to use.
He will put up a donation box - asking for $2 that he will contribute to his church.
I will park there (or at my office - I work on Performance Road) before I even think of paying the $5.

Sounds great! I hope he does it. I'd go then.

We're going to Catawba River tomorrow to ride at 9AM. If they are charging the $5.00 to park, we'll be going to Reni Park instead.

The ride has shifted from Catawba to Uwharrie National Forest.
If you can make it to Uwharrie, be at the trail head at 9 AM.
There will be 4 to 8 guys showing up as it stands now.

Here's an updated article that includes the agreement to open the entry drive and the offer from the guy on Hawfield to let bikes park there....

Isn't the old parking lot still open for use.. or do they keep that gate locked now?

Rode through there when I was out for a ride and the gate was locked.  Opening that gate back up would make for a great parking spot for the mountain bikers again.

One complaint from the center is that the facilities over at the park are being used with no revenue coming in to the park.  We could just go back to the good ol days, park in the old lot and use the woods for a bathroom!

They could still charge the parking fee at the main gate, but we would have a spot to park if we don't plan to use the facilities.

Also - saw that the guy on Hawfield has a sign up saying that he is going to offer primitive camping on his land.  His lot is the last drive on the right just before you enter the park gates.  I think he's the one that said he would charge $2 and give the money to his church.  Sounds like a real option - and we could just roll right through the gate past their parking guard!
