Really haven't set a budget as of yet on a new fork, but considering the fact that cash flow is limited. It'll be a while before I can get anything. Right now I'm just trying to figure out where to start looking.

How do you like the Pike? Does soak up hits well? How about the tracking and fork flex... is it stout? I've never ridden on a bike with a Pike before and the most travel I've ever had is a 120 mm fork.

I'll check out the Pike.

knew you were going to ask that.  I actually don't run one.  I ran a first generation Pike for about a year.  latteral stiffness as well as overall stiffness was great.  i switched to the firm spring(i'm 205) and still had issues bottoming it off big hits but the small bump sensitivity was great.  I tried the xtra firm spring and big hit absorbtion was great but lost the small bump.  I was going to go back to the 454 air but after my marzo all mountain 1sl fiasco, and marzocchi giving me a 55 eta, I swore off of air forks for a while.  if I were to go back to an air fork the 454 air would be at the top.  i sold my pike to a buddy here in charlotte and he absolutely loves it and didn't need a rebuild until this year (3 years later)

I was checking out the Pike at Rock Shox's website and it looks like I may need to go with a different fork with a quick release or get a new hub since the one I have now is not a 20mm axle. I definitely want to built up my ride to take some hits, but I doubt I'll be doing anything too large.

What I'll be working with is a Ventana El Saltamontes Frame, I may upgrade it's rocker to a 5". The hubs I have are I9 classic hubs and a set of Stan's Flow rims. The Salty frame is more of an AM frame than a FR frame so a quick release my not be a bad option so I can keep my existing I9 hubs.

Does the fork you have now have a 20 mm axle? I've never used a 20 mm axle fork. But they look like they'd take some abuse and stiffen up any lateral torque on the wheel.

Thanks

I've been shopping for a new fork as well wanting to upgrade my travel from the Reba that came on my bike.  I'm pretty set on the Revelation as a good in between.  130mm of adjustable travel and you can get air or coil with a lock out and rebound adjustment.

This is just based on some research I've done on forks in the $400 and under range.

Anyone have experience with the RVL?

Mickey, currently i run a Marzocchi 55 ETA on my transition preston with a 20mm and a marzocchi all mountain 1 sl with a 20mm on my sinister ridge.  i would honestly go with a 20mm.  it will add noticeable stiffness to the front and i think it's a benefit even if you're not hitting anything real big.

as for the rvl, I have no ride time on them.  but i've seen a lot of 4x bikes running them which tells me they can take a beating.

I was talking to a guy just this past weekend about his RVL. He said he liked it and hasn't had any trouble with it at all. I'll check it out, the price sounds right in line with my budget too.

If you want stiffness, definatly go with the 20mm like vinny suggested. I have an 05 Marz AM1 with the quick release and it holds its own but I wish I had the 20mm version.

Well I'm out of the market for a longer travel fork now that I unloaded all my full suspension frames. But it sounds like I'm looking for a 20mm axle fork when the time comes to start shopping around again.

Thanks for the suggestions and keeping posting if you have any other suggestions. I'm only without aFS frame for the time being and plan to build up a FS Ventana El Bastardo 650b eventually.
